Have people lost weight by cutting carbs? Well, sure they have! But is it healthy? If you want to lose a small amount of weight, say 2 pounds it probably will be safe. However, if you want to lose a lot of weight then you must approach it in a smart and healthy way, and change your lifestyle.
A survey of 11,000 people by NPD group, a New York market research firm, found that only one out of every four dieters is actually significantly cutting carbs. If you compare a regular diet and a low-carb diet based on the same number of calories and fat you will see losses are exactly the same. But as much as 10 pounds can be lost in the initial stages of these kinds of diets because of water loss.
The pros to some of these well-known diets would be that you would lose weight in the short term. However the Cons for these types of diets outweigh the pros by a significant amount. For example: the South Beach diet has the following side effect, bloating in the abdomen. Is that what you're looking for when you diet? Absolutely not!
The Atkins diet research has shown that this diet does not provide enough energy in the form of carbohydrate. These diets can also adversely affect calcium levels to the body. Most Atkins dieters experience constipation, halitosis, and sometimes dehydration. You must also account for every gram of carbohydrate you consume, which can be difficult for some people to do, particularly when eating out (try counting carbohydrates at your local Golden Coral). And finally those who returned to eating carbs again usually regain all if not more than the weight they lost during the diet.
So in conclusion although it involves some patients, losing weight gradually is better. Go slowly and eat healthy foods from all the major food groups keeping the big picture in mind, not just the quick fix.
